Toilet training your puppy is one of the first and most important things you will have to deal with. It should not be a difficult and long drawn out process if you follow a few simple rules. When it comes to toilet training puppy tips and techniques can really help to make it a smooth, painless procedure.
Take Your Puppy Outdoors to Go to the Toilet
Puppies need to use the bathroom frequently; they have very poor bladder control initially so you should make sure that you take your puppy outdoors at regular intervals. This should include taking your puppy outdoors immediately after he has woken from a nap, around 15 minutes after he has finished eating as well as other regular intervals. Make sure that you take your puppy outside into the garden area at least every couple of hours throughout the day.
Choose a toilet area for your puppy carefully and give him the opportunity to sniff, run and play there. Take him to the same place consistently for him to get the idea which will help him to remember why he's there - particularly when he smells the results of previous visits to the toilet spot.
Allow your puppy plenty of time to sniff and explore but don't allow this to become a play area - that's why you should choose the location for your puppy to be toilet trained carefully.
When the puppy is actually "doing the business" you should repeat a pre-chosen key phrase for him to associate with what he is doing. Choose something specific for this activity - something like "go potty" or "be clean". In time the puppy will associate both the place and the command with relieving himself and you will be able to use it on demand. Make sure that you choose a phrase which is short and not to be used in any other situation to avoid mishaps.
Toilet Training Puppy Rewards
You should reward your puppy within around 15 seconds after he has gone to the toilet, before he moves away and starts to play or enjoy some other type of activity. You can use treats, praise, play time or whatever you like. This will help the puppy to associate going to the bathroom with a treat and for this reason it is important that you go outdoors with your puppy when you are in the potty training phase.
Food and Water
If you stick to regular feeding times with your puppy it will help to establish a toilet routine. It is likely that your puppy will need to go to the bathroom within around 10 minutes of finishing a meal so be ready to accompany him outdoors after feeding time. Don't leave a bowl of food for your puppy to eat at will throughout the day - this will make it much more difficult to toilet train your puppy. He should, however have access to clean drinking water at all times.
Follow these few tips and toilet training your puppy should be a relatively quick and smooth experience.
